Help Me Appear in Teen Vogue!

Hey Everyone!

Back in October I helped out as a model for Teen Vogue's Fashion University -particularly the Lycra styling seminar. The students in this seminar were instructed to create a look with a limited amount of clothing assembled by the Lycra sponsors (1 rack per group). Each group of aspiring stylists consisted of about 10 girls with about 40 minutes to grab,deconstruct/reconstruct, and style a complete look. The winning group gets their look published in an upcoming issue of Teen Vogue- and so does the model :)

(PS. unlike it says on the site- it had nothing to do with necklaces! Oops- looks like they made a typo!)

Thanks for reading!
Happy Holidays!! And have an amazing break :)

Pam Anderson for Vivienne Westwood?

WWD’s confirming last month’s wild rumor that Pamela Anderson’s the face of Vivienne Westwood for Spring 09.

The former Jane columnist, or Baywatch star, whichever, stars alongside Dame Viv and her husband Andreas Kronthaler in her Malibu trailer.

Juergen Teller’s shot the ads, no surprise there, in which Pam rocks all four of Vivienne’s labels - Red, Gold, Anglomania and MAN.

Apparently, Viv was as surprised as I was to see Pam sitting front row in a smashing gold dress at September’s Red Label show during London fashion week. She was so blown away, in fact, that when it came time to pick the models for the spring campaign she eschewed them altogether in favor of Pam.

We’d have picked a second round of Dita, but we’ll be patient, we swear.

Siena shows in London

Spanning five days, London Fashion Week might be a little shorter come February, but there are a few new names to add to the city’s schedule. Sienna and Savannah Miller’s label, Twenty8Twelve, will make its runway debut with an evening show Sunday, Feb. 22, at a yet-to-be-confirmed venue. A spokeswoman for the label said the sisters felt it was “the right time” to show the line on the runway — previously, the collection has been sold from showrooms. The spokeswoman added it’s not confirmed whether former model Sienna will take a turn on the runway in her own designs.

So any pretty actress with a Stylist is now a fashion designer?

“As symbolic gestures of hostility go, shoe tossing is rather incomprehensible. Why throw something that needs to be retrieved? You cannot beat a hasty retreat without your shoes. Better to, as they do at Tom Jones concerts, toss less essential items like panties or brassieres. Other possibilities: cracked dentures, out-of-fashion hats, and expired toupees.”- Simon Doonan's answer to Vanity Fair's question: Which kind of shoe is best for throwing?

Hoop Skirts= Liberation?

This article from a French exhibit that claims that the crinoline (hoop skirt) was an engine of feminist change.

It kind of reminds me of the myth that Vassar's halls are so wide so that ladies in their hoops could get exercise....

Jewelry saves the World

M.I.A.'s sister, Kali Arulpragasam, has created a line of necklaces that provide social commentary on World Hunger. Inspired by the way food is perceived in countries other than in the West, Arulpragasam made beads that molded from staples like corn, beans, rice, lentils and seeds, and has created with that some amazing jewelry. She uses Iraq, Afghanistan, Sri Lanka and another six countries as themes.

It may sound like an oxymoron to create gold and silver beads to send a message about poverty, famine and consumption but in her defense we have to point out that a percentage of the sales from this collection will go directly to Oxfam International. Additionally, Arulpragasam plans to donate each respective necklace design to its corresponding country's national museum. "I'm one of those people who can't do much about what's going on in those places," she explains. "This is small compared to what's going on, but hopefully it will have an impact."

Beth Ditto to be on 'Love' Launch Cover

Beth Ditto, the over 200 pound lesbian frontwoman for indie band Gossip, will be on the inaugural cover for Katie Grand's new magazine for Conde Nast, called 'Love'. Katie Grand is a stylist from London and the founder of the very successful Pop magazine, which has featured Ditto before. The use of Ditto is an interesting, different choice for a launch cover but in reading other fashion blogs people call the decision, "predictable" while others think that it is awesome. Love is supposed to be the fashion magazine that is currently missing from the industry. It will come out twice a year and be more edgy than other magazines. It is interesting that Conde Nast is even launching a new magazine during a time when they are cutting 5% of their existing magazines. They must trust Katie to deliver, again.

Here is Ditto(Right) with model Kate Moss (Center)
Ditto has been recognized as a fashion icon in England

Disneymania Meets Couture:Disney Lifestyle Brand

For most people, Disney conjures up visions of fairy princesses, Mickey Mouse and the carefree days of childhood. For years, the Disney Corporation has used these images to build its empire of television and movie enterprises and resorts. Thus making it one of the most powerful brand names in the world---rivaling that of McDonalds. Thus, Disney’s entrance into the world of high fashion should not be such a shock to fashionistas worldwide.

Starting in 2002, the company tiptoed into high-end retail, seeking out partnerships with designers like Paul Smith, Vivienne Tam and Dolce & Gabbana. This very successful campaign has led to Disney’s venture into expensive home furnishings and hip jewelry. And to facilitate this journey, the corporation has created a variety of new brand names for the new couture fashions. The “upscale, high-glam” Disney Couture is primarily for women, while guys have Bloc28, a name that refers to Mickey Mouse’s debut in 1928. The labels, featured in fashion magazines like Vogue and worn by celebrities like Rihanna, are sold only in boutiques and in department stores like Bloomingdale’s and NeimanMarcus. Many consumers have noticed a similarity between Disney Couture and Juicy Couture.

Disney says that sales of its home and lifestyle products will total about $85 million in the next 12 months, making up one percent of the consumer unit’s revenue. Within five years, the company projects the category will deliver $500 million in sales a year.

Bookery

I know during study week the last thing you want to see is another book... but check out these cool rings made out of pages of a book! Betty Pepper is a textile / jewelery designer maker. In her effort to find that elusive something which makes an object desirable and somewhat ‘magical’ she explores different media and techniques in both two and three-dimensions.

I Support Same Sex Marriage

My friend Tara Littman, the President of Support Shirts, is a designer whose work was picked up by Urban Outfitters a few months ago for sale in some of their stores and on their website. The style Urban chose was the work of her and her boyfriend Travis, a shirt that proclaims “I Support Same Sex Marriage.” Lots of my friends (mostly straight) own and wear these shirts. It’s a bold and blunt statement, so I was thrilled when she told me that Urban was going to sell them. When I asked how things were going, she told me that Urban had pulled them after only a week of sale, citing “bad press” that Tara and I soon found to be nonexistent. I told her I would like to help out, so I interviewed her about this and the subsequent lies that Urban Outfitters told to try and cover themselves, including to groups of customers looking for the freshly-pulled shirts.

Tara did not view the design as that of a bullying nature, but rather as an “obvious statement [simply] in support of same sex marriage.” Nothing more offensive or pushy than a shirt that says “I support Barack Obama” or “I support John McCain.”Tara and Travis “worked very closely with buyers from Urban Outfitters to create a custom color combination that suited their collection” and “after several months of back and forth discussions over colors and orders, we got the green light.”

But a week after the shirts had shipped to Urban to sell on the web and in the key market of California – where a law allowing same sex marriages had just passed when their discussions with Urban began – Tara, upon e-mailing the buyer for a sales report, was told that “they had been pulled from all of the stores and the web because of ‘too much bad press.’” Just a week before Proposition 8 was approved, her support shirt was removed from what she thought was “one of the most liberal, open minded stores.” At first she was disheartened at the thought of so much negative reaction to such a simple design proclaiming only the wearers’ personal positive disposition on a very timely and much-discussed issue. But after doing some research to find all this supposed “bad press,” all that came up at the time of the pull was one blog entry, which appeared on a small site devoted solely to combat gay marriage in the time of Proposition 8. Nothing more.

What Tara did find in her research, however, were “a bunch of articles on the president and founder of Urban Outfitters [Richard Hayne], his conservative views, and his contributions to [ousted homophobic politician] Rick Santorum.” Articles covering Hayne’s contributions to multiple conservative politicians and his personal conservatism dated back as early as 2003. This is not a crime by any means, but Tara did not feel that it was sufficient grounds to renege on an agreement. She told me “this is not a shirt with ice cream cones or puppies, it is a political shirt. With quite a few pro-Obama shirts in their store and even some anti-McCain products, this clearly isn’t a company that has a problem being politically aligned, so why?” She wonders if it is “just the homosexual community under attack here.”

Her frustration was further fueled by an e-mail she received regarding a group of California residents who went into an Urban Outfitters in Los Angeles to purchase the shirts. They wanted to wear them to a Proposition 8 rally following the election. The e-mail said that when they asked about the shirts, a sales rep told them that they were no longer carrying them “due to a dispute with the company,” a charge that Tara claims is simply a lie… and one that she believes is being perpetuated as a way of putting the blame for the absence of the shirts unfairly onto her company’s shoulders. The only dispute between Urban Outfitters and Support Shirts is this one, now, created by Urban’s remarkably flawed handling of the situation with this one harmless design.

“With the news of the approval of Prop 8 in California it has become clear that these shirts deserve a place,” Tara says. People need to hear this story and those who do support same sex marriage need to be proud of it and not be afraid to wear it on their sleeve. Our country needs these shirts more than ever, and I’m sorry that Urban Outfitters is too conservative or too scared to give this worthy cause a voice.”

Support Shirts is not giving up, though. The “I Support Same Sex Marriage” shirt will soon be available on their website along with their other designs. Tara, Travis, and Support Shirts are hoping that more retail outlets will step forward and show their support in this time for historic statements. Companies like Urban Outfitters – who have built a questionable reputation of being the mainstream, accessible retailer for hip and emerging ideas in fashion – do a great disservice to their customers, and to the massive queer population of America and its millions of straight supporters, by discontinuing the sale of this product and subsequently lying about the circumstances.

I urge you to contact Urban Outfitters by e-mail, phone, or mail if you are concerned by this story. You can also purchase one of the “I Support Same Sex Marriage” shirts direct from Support Shirts.

Goodbye Art

Phil Hansen spent the last year creating pieces of art work that he destroyed immediately after completion. Hansen puts it simply, "This is to help me be more creative and spontaneous." Hansen started with large scale portraits made out of leaves and pinecones, and then moved on to syringes, tricylcles and garbage. My personal favorite is a portrait of Jimi Hendrix lighting his guitar on fire made out of stacked matches. You can watch the project being built, and then burned, below. And check out his website with all of the Goodbye Art projects, here.
