Bib Necklaces

I saw this beautiful necklace by Moschino... and I really want it. I love these statement pieces.

But I do think it is a little out of my price range... Here is one that I found on Etsy might satisfy my lust for only $40.

Fashion Tweets

Garance Dore is on Twitter!

Ugh, she's so cool....
Also if you happen to be on twitter, make sure you are following TheMoment, NYTimesStyle, and Women'sWearDaily. Even in Pougkeepsie you can get play by play updates of global fashion.

Mini Mini Skirts

Now I love a mini skirt. Maybe it is my way of rebelling against the fascist security guards from high school who wrote me up for having skirts shorter than my fingertips. They make your legs look long and lean, plus I have a great use for all of those skirts from my youth. However, I saw this picture on The Sartorialist a few days ago and even I thought, Come on, Where are your pants? And then I felt like my grandmother. Everyone who commented on it seemed to love it (except the guy who said she looked like a baby prostitute). You guys may decide for yourselves, I just needed to hear some other opinions.

Japan Fashion Week

Designers Yoshikazu Yamagata and Kentaro Tamai used a pony and mannequins to show their spring/summer collection, so it's hardly surprising that they took a less than conventional route for fall/winter... by not showing any clothing at all. The pair of mavericks encased their models in fanciful sculptures made out of crumpled paper, duct tape, tin foil, shards of styrofoam and other castoffs. An anti-fashion statement? Not so — or so they say. Backstage, the designers explained that they wanted to show how real fashion design goes beyond clothing to touch people on an emotional level.

I just can't help myself

The Chanel purse kit is just TOO MUCH. It combines two of my favorite things (classic Chanel purses and little kits) and something about it is just so fab. I don't know how this would translate to daily wear, but I'm definitely tempted to try it out. If only my tax refund check would cover a Chanel bag...

Kim Kardashian's Blog/Thigh High Boots

So I didn't realize Kim Kardashian has a blog. Now I have a whole new way to procrastinate.
"Spring is here and my stylists, Monica, Angela and I hit up the stores to see what we could find. It seems as the day went on, my outfit kept changing! I stopped at Vionnet on Robertson and picked up a headband, then at Intermix I added on the camel leather cropped jacket, then at the end of the day my feet were killing me, so I bought some amazing thigh high suede boots that were flat so that I could make it through the rest of the day. They were 50% off, which was cool. I definitely love shopping. Who doesn't! I love to see what other stores have, compare it to Dash, and see what we could do better! Are you feeling my hippie look? I loved it!"
-Kim Kardashian
This is a girl who has two stylists and shops at Intermix. Why does she dress like this? Now Kim, I too love a good bargain but just because it's cheap doesn't mean it works on you. Thigh high boots are in and all but you don't need to do all these trends at once! It looks like this style might only work on super skinny french girls.

lucky bitch

I'm not usually one for little dogs, but I'm in love with the life of Chichy Cappello, beloved pup of fashion photographer Kenneth Cappello. He's created a blog documenting her charmed life. Look, she's just chilling with James McAvoy. Never have I been more jealous of a dog.

Check out Chichy's blog here and Kenneth's blog here

"No one is going to want to look too Dubai"

Anna Wintour on what to expect for Fall 2009:

"It is so important for designers not to run scared, and not to be too worried about what's safe and what's commercial.

Right now, what's going to work is something their customer doesn't have in her closet and that has a real intrinsic sense of value. …Because to be honest there's been too much product, too much copy-catting, and, probably too much consumerism. I think a sense of clarity, a sense leveling off and a sense of reality is needed."

Did Anna Wintour just say "too much consumerism" ?? Isn't that what her entire career is based on?

Back to the 80s!

Robin Ghivan, the fashion critic for the Washington Post was recently offered her opinions on the current 80s revival: "I think that it’s just a lack of imagination whenever so many people latch on to something like that," she said. "And I think I would feel differently if I thought it was sort of lovingly being done well and with a certain panache. But I don’t think the world needs MC Hammer pants ever, ever again. Michael Jackson is back and he wants his clothes." Her own eighties wardrobe still scares her. "I mean, acid-wash jeans, hello? Hasn’t everyone had some horrible run in with acid-wash jeans?"

Our Vogues, Ourselves

After over 100 years of continuous publication, Vogue suddenly seems pretty tired. Recently, rumors lit the fashion world on fire with news of Anna Wintour maybe retiring due to falling advertising revenue and the magazine’s general staleness. Fashion is about the new, the now, but honestly, reading any of the latest issues of Vogue would be a choice cure for insomnia. Compared to the European and Asian versions of Vogue, the articles and spreads in American Vogue were flat, boring, and uncreative. For example, in the March 2009 issue of Vogue, there was not one but two—two!—spreads of models against a beige background, a theme that Vogue has been using for the past year. Some commentators claimed that the American readership was the root of the problem. Unlike the international editions of Vogue, American Vogue has a wide circulation. In Europe, only diehard fashionistas read fashion magazines, which could account for the visually daring spreads and genuinely interesting articles. But in my opinion, it’s an insult to Americans to assume that we don’t want anything daring, creative or beautiful. Perhaps we should blame the editors?
I decided to compare the content of an issue of Vogue Italia and an issue of Vogue to examine the cultural differences contained therein. When I read the May 2008 issue of Vogue Italia, I felt like I was being treated as an educated and cultured person: articles included write-ups on a drama and dance festival in Bologna; a new building in Turin; a French Islamic actor; a newly restored botanical garden in Berlin; and a profile of Eva Mendes, who happened to be the cover model. In comparison, the April 2009 issue had articles on Anjelica Huston’s half-sister; how to be a good godparent (seriously?); laser plastic surgery; a profile of Wangechi Mutu, who was featured at the Loeb a few months ago; an offensive profile of Adele; and a profile of Beyonce, the cover model. For the past few issues, American Vogue has had starlets and celebrities grace its covers: 2009 has seen Anne Hathaway, Blake Lively, Michelle Obama, and the aforementioned Beyonce. Yet Vogue Italia has had models, Pixie Geldorf (ugh, I know, but she’s some sort of fashion icon), Amber Valletta (a model), and more models.
One would expect the international editions of Vogue to be snooty, considering their limited audience, but in fact, American Vogue is just that—a publication obsessed with celebrity, plastic surgery (even in the so-called Shape Issue, which, by the way, had the gall to suggest that I should wear a bathing suit with halter straps. Hello, we hourglass figures have these things called boobs, we can’t wear halter tops!), and socialites, and maybe it mentions that little thing called the fashion industry once or twice. Of course, each edition of Vogue says something about its country of origin. Vogue Nippon usually features Caucasian models on its covers. Asian women are generally made up to look more Western. A quick Google search reveals that Vogue Russia likes putting scary dominatrixes on its covers. Vogue India either puts Caucasian women on its covers, or at least Indian women who have very pale skin.
Clearly it’s not the readers who drive the content: it’s the editors. They assume, for example, that the average Indian woman wants to hold up a white woman as a standard of beauty. They would also assume that the average American reader just can’t handle the artsy craziness that is W, a magazine that shares a publisher and cover price with Vogue. W essentially serves the same function as the international Vogues: it contains some articles about stylish people but mostly focuses on the industry and on interesting photo shoots. There’s no earthly reason why W and Vogue should be separate magazines and yet here we are. Instead of calling for Nuclear Wintour’s resignation, we should demand that Conde Nast not play it safe. Vogue readers want beautiful and interesting fashion spreads. They don’t want to learn how to be socialites.

I Heard it Through the Grapevine...

If you are a fashion blog junkie, there are two blogs you almost definitely have bookmarked: The Sartorialist, and Garance Doré. For those of you who have yet to discover these fantastic blogs, the gentleman behind The Sartorialist is Scott Schuman, and the lady behind Garance Doré is, well, Garance Doré. Both blogs are all about street style, and while Garance's is mainly based in Paris and Scott's in New York, the two have become globe trotting style gurus, traveling to cities to snap pics of everyday individuals who have paid that special attention to detail, or given their outfit that interesting twist. WELL....

...the word on the street (blog gossip!!) is that the two are dating! I know that Scott has kids, and had thought he was still married, but I guess that's no longer the case.

A stylish looking duo indeed.

Sustainable Fashion

Designer Eviana Hartman, who received Ecco Domani’s first Sustainable Design award, earned street cred writing an eco column for The Washington Post, working at Vogue, and creating the collection’s first two seasons with Samantha Pleet. She’s now on her own, and the results of her research are evident in the conscious content (recycled PET nylon, locally dyed Ahimsa silk, organic garment care labels) and modern concepts (structural Parabola dress, everyday-amazing Distortion tank, sexy but staid Orbit shorts). The line has just been released at some boutiques in NY, Steven Alan, I Heart, and Bird. Go and get it!!

Welcome back!

Oh HEY friends-- welcome back! Hope your spring break was epic in the best way possible, and that you're psyched to be back: only basically two more months left in the semester, crazzzy.

Over break I managed to get my hands on a copy of LOVE magazine (the one I kept on yabbing on about), and besides the fact it weighs a ton, it's quite a fun read. The first half of the issue is set up as an A to Z, filled with clothes, designers, models, artists, and actors, and the second half has more fleshed out articles about everyone from Iggy Pop, Lily Allen, Kelly Brook and Angelica Huston, to articles on Courtney Love, up and coming singers, and a photoshoot of Kate Moss' boobs (well, not quite, but basically. Katie Grand obviously loves the ta-tas, becuase there's a good amount of them throughout the mag). It's interesting in that a lot of the people featured aren't necessarily new "it" celebs, quite a few of them have been around for a while. It's obvious that everyone involved had a lot of fun putting the issue together, it comes through in the playful and upbeat content and layout. While I might not be head over heels in love with it, I'm definitely quite smitten.

Here are a couple of things I LOVEd:

- The use of Page Three girls for a photo entry on t-shirts

-The silver Hogan bag ... that I can only seem to find a photo of in gold:

-The photos: they're big, they're glossy, they're lush, and they just look so good. ex:

-Glenn Obrien (editorial director of Interview magazine): "If you love someone set them free. And if they don't come back, hunt them down and kill them."

-Kelly Brook: from pin-up model, to West End actress. She was considered too curvy to be a high-end fashion model, but she definitely rocks the voluptuous sexy:

-The fact that Marc Jacob's favourite love song is "You Are My Sunshine."

-Model Oluchi Onweagba, who I wasn't familiar with before-- she's gorgeous:

... and the list could go on... but this is starting to get a bit out of control.

Calvin Cameo

For those of you who are relaxing and watching a lot of TV over this spring break, you might have noticed Calvin Klein's cameo last night on 30 Rock. The episode is entitled "The Bubble," if you would like to watch it online. In this episode, Jon Hamm, who plays Tina Fey's boyfriend, demonstrates the joy of being beautiful. When walking down the street with Tina Fey, Hamm is complimented on his looks by a stranger and has his parking ticket torn up by a traffic warden. Then, Klein taps him on the shoulder and asks, "I am Calvin Klein and I think you should be my next underwear model." It is no surprise he was featured, his daughter, Marci Klein, is the executive producer of the show.

Watch it for yourself:

Marc Jacobs is Engaged!

Marc Jacobs and long term boyfriend Lorenzo Martone are engaged. The designer and his ad executive boyfriend, who have been together for about a year, will go public with the news beginning Thursday, when they arrive in Brazil wearing rings. The couple is headed to Martone’s native Sao Paolo for a fete celebrating the Marc Jacobs multibrand store there, which opened in January. They have not set a wedding date.

See That Pretty Girl in the Mirror There

Let's not pretend for a second that there's not room in my little gay heart for fashion, celebrities AND musical revivals. Check out this great Vanity Fair spread, in honor of the recently incarnated West Side Story, with cameos by J.Lo, Camilla Belle, and others. There's been a slew of these photographic recreations of late, especially in VF, but until the cast of GG starts fight-dancing through the halls of Pencey Prep in their new musical revue, 'The Trust Fund Follies', I'll take a little retro glam where I can get it.

Vintage Ads

Nothing gets me more excited than some good old-fashioned pop art (aka schnazzy atomic age magazine ads). If you're looking to kill some time and have a love of Arrow shirts, Sanka coffee, and Chevrolets, check out Plan 59. It's a fun online database of ads from the 40s, 50s and 60s, with enough kitsch and Cold War flare to justify a jump in the Mad Men direction.

Famous Photos

Emma Roberts.... Audrey Hepburn?

Glamour featured remakes of famous photos in their current issue including Lindsey Lohan as Madonna, Camilla Belle as Mary Tyler Moore, Alexis Bledel as Rosie the Riveter, Alicia Keys as Michelle Obama, Elisha Cuthbert as Brandi Chastain, Chanel Iman as Althea Gibson and more!!!

Speaking of Tom Ford...

Here's a recent interview with the designer: wearer of impeccable suits, procurer of excellent Botox, part-time role model, full time BAMF. He's got opinions on men's jewelry, tuxedos, sex of all kinds, and obviously, the nature of sexy.

Vanity Fair is... Funny?

Original

Comedy

I had no idea that Vanity Fair had any sense of humor but the cover of their new issue featuring the newest Comedy legends: Paul Rudd as Tom Ford, Jonah Hill as Scarlett Johannson, Seth Rogan as Kiera Knightley, and Jason Segel as the braver version of Rachel McAdams (who didn't feel comfortable with the original shoot).
