Reel to Real #8: Ingrid Bergman in "Notorious"

I just watched Hitchcokc's 1946 film "Notorious" for my Art of Film class. Though Cary Grant gets first billing, it is really the story of Ingrid Bergman's character, Alicia Huberman, a party girl who is forced into the arms of a Nazi collaborator in order to spy on him. Bergman is a wonderfully expressive and dynamic actress who makes Alicia a memorable and very likable character. Throughout the film, clothes are used to express her interior life and changes in lifestyle. To establish her as a wild character, we first meet her in a stunning, midriff-baring zebra-print dress that is far classier that that description suggests:

Her Edith Head-designed ensembles feature graphic black-and-white patterns and eye-catching details such as  a headpiece that connects to a jacket:

Though Bergman's character is said to be a wild child, she always looks classy.

  1. She's stunning. I wish there were more coverage on Ingrid's fashion.
